What People Say

kitten on piano.jpg

I MET MICHAEL WHEN I JOINED HIS CHRISTMAS CANTATA CHOIR IN 2013 AT HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH IN BELLEVILLE ONT.

I ARRIVED WORRIED THAT I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO LEARN THE MUSIC AND SING ON KEY AS IT HAD BEEN OVER 30 YEARS SINCE I PARTICIPATED IN CHORAL MUSIC. FROM THE VERY FIRST PRACTICE I KNEW I WAS IN THE RIGHT PLACE WITH THE RIGHT TEACHER IN THE RIGHT CHOIR! HIS PATIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND PASSION FOR MUSIC SWEEP EVERYONE ALONG WITH HIM INTO A WONDERFUL SPACE OF HARMONY AND COMPANIONSHIP.

SINCE JOINING HIS CHOIR I HAVE GONE ON TO TAKE PRIVATE VOCAL LESSONS IN HIS STUDIO, SING AND PERFORM IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE, NARRATE AND HAVE EVEN BROUGHT THE JOY OF CHORAL SINGING TO MY WORKPLACE TO SHARE WITH THEM. I AM LEARNING THEORY, TECHNIQUE, BREATH CONTROL, SELF CONFIDENCE AND LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

MICHAEL ENCOURAGED ME TO SING IN 2 OF OUR LOCAL FESTIVALS THIS YEAR AS WELL.  I REMEMBER WATCHING AND LISTENING TO AND MARVELING AT OTHER PEOPLE’S COURAGE TO SING IN FRONT OF OTHERS AND WISHING I WAS BRAVE AND CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO DO THIS.  MICHAEL HAS GIVEN ME THIS COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE AND HAS OPENED A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF POSSIBILITY TO ME.

I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO PARTICIPATE IN MICHAEL’S NEW CHOIR AND ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO JOIN IN AND SING!

THANK YOU MICHAEL,

ELAINE ALLEN

HELLO THERE!

JUST A NOTE TO SAY HI! FROM ME AND MY PIANO STUDENTS WHO EVERY YEAR ASK IF YOU ARE COMING BACK TO BE THEIR EXAMINER! THEY LOVED YOU BEST OF ALL OF THEM. KEEP THE GREAT SONGS GOING, AND ALL THE BEST TO YOU! YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT HAS CAUSED MY EXAM STUDENTS TO BLOSSOM, AND FOR THIS I THANK YOU, MICHAEL. THEY ALWAYS WANT TO KNOW WHO THE EXAMINER WILL BE, HOPING THEY'LL GET TO PLAY FOR YOU AGAIN!

HELEN GOFF, ORLEANS, ONTARIO

DEAR MICHAEL,

"I CAN’T EVEN BEGIN TO THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS. SINGING HAS BEEN SUCH A BIG PART OF MY LIFE, THANKS TO YOU AND I CAN’T BELIEVE MY LESSONS ARE OVER.

YOU’VE BEEN THE MOST AMAZING ROLE MODEL AND I CAN’T IMAGINE HAVING ANYONE ELSE AS MY TEACHER.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY YEAR IS ALWAYS THE ROTARY AND STIRLING MUSIC FESTIVAL AND I’VE ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO OUR SUPER LATE MONDAY NIGHT LESSONS.

YOU’VE TAUGHT ME SO MUCH AND I’LL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL.

I’LL MISS YOU SO MUCH NEXT YEAR, BUT DEFINITELY WANT TO COME BACK TO YOUR RECITAL NEXT YEAR TO SEE YOUR NEW TALENTS.

Hello Michael

I must tell you how much Michael's playing contributed to the worship service at St. Columba on November 12. The Remembrance service is a treasured one for this congregation, and the addition of a live trumpet, played with such talent, created a powerful moment of remembering for all. Many people commented on how much they appreciated Michael's contributions to the service, and how well he played. I, myself, was deeply moved not only by his playing, but also by the manner in which he conducted himself in worship and in the fellowship time before and after the service. Such maturity and respect shown by a talented young man. He will certainly be invited to participate in our worship service again.

I was also quite touched by Michael's desire to contribute the honourarium he was given to our Christmas Sharing donations. This contribution is not public knowledge, of course, but the Elder who is looking after our contributions to Christmas Sharing was visibly moved by Michael's generosity. Michael spoke to him personally to hand him the cheque. I wanted to you to know about Michael's heartfelt gift for those who need some help at Christmas.

My Corey also spoke with Michael to suggest they play together again. Their leading of 'O Canada' was done with confidence and skill, and encouraged the congregation to sing with national pride. They played very well together. Corey has since mentioned he would like to follow up on that idea, perhaps for a recital or festival.

Michael represented your music studio very well at St. Columba. We are deeply grateful for his presence and his music. As his teacher, I know you are already quite proud of him, and this is certainly a testimony to how your teaching is affecting the lives of your students, and those of the people who benefit from their talents.

Blessings

Jennifer

Hi Michael,

We did not have an opportunity to thank you for your contribution to mom’s service. Everything went very well and that was much appreciated.

In addition, I unfortunately only get to hear Andrew sing once per year and every time I see significant improvements; in a good part from the excellent coaching that he is receiving.

Well done and thanks again,

David Powell and family

Dear Michael,

As you could feel during the 'concert', those in attendance very much appreciated the program you put together for our group.  From your comprehensive introductions to the talent and poise displayed by Logan, Corey, Peyton and Andrew and your accompaniment & playing with Logan, it was a treat for the eyes and ears.  Thank you for your skill in teaching music, as well as stage presence and other skills that make a performance polished.

Anne and I heard many appreciative comments during the afternoon.

Please pass on our thanks, again, to the four.  In years to come we expect to be able to say, "I heard them in Belleville; their talent and dedication was unmistakable."  And thank you.

Regards,

Margaret

Hello Michael,

It was so nice to meet you in person this weekend!  Thank you for your beautiful accompaniment, as well as your support and encouragement of Brooke and Alicia right from exams through to recital. We really enjoyed our time in Ontario and hope we’ll have an opportunity to be back at a Conservatory Canada event in the future.

With many thanks,

Amanda Zarubin

Michael,

Thank you again for accompanying Emily at the recital on Saturday evening. She had a great time and we totally appreciated you being able play for her, so kind of you to do that for the kids! I hope that our paths cross again soon.

All The Best,

Lisa and Emily

Dear Michael,

Thanks for the Youtube tracks of choir songs. They are very helpful.

I appreciate the time you took to do this for the choir.

Bev.

Dear Michael,

I can’t thank you enough for the tremendous experience in Music that Dixon received from you over the last 7 years. He made a lot of people happy in our families and has a base that I believe will both last him a lifetime and be there for him, should and when he engages in more musical education.

From a parent’s standpoint, I can’t tell you how much I respect the courage needed to get up, compete and be judged in front of a crowd of people...not to forget of course, the work ethic, discipline and dedication required to get you there.

I don’t know where it goes from here but we will be in touch as soon as we get organized and/or need some advice.

A sincere thank you,

Jake

Dear Michael:

Thank you for your update!

I love the midi e exams! Such flexibility and I love being involved in their exam.

I really enjoy your relaxed and friendly interaction with our students.

Thanks!

Sherry

Dear Michael,

I just want to send a quick note to say thank you. Yesterday was a really hard day of grieving for me. I sat down to practice my pieces and the heaviness lifted. By the time I was playing the Guaraldi piece I was feeling much better, to the point that I asked Logan if I could play it for him! That's a big deal for me. Anyway, after 30 years away from it, playing the piano has become an amazing source of peace and healing for me. And Logan's comment when I told him how I'm feeling about it was that I have the right teacher for that to happen.

Bless you.

Hi Michael

Kendra is really enjoying singing and as I know many of the songs, we are able to sing them together at home which is very special.

Thanks for all you are doing with them.

Cathy

I also wanted to give feedback on this past exam with Michael Faulkner for Elisabeth Marchl-Alfing.  It was a pleasure to work with him and he had a great balance of setting my student at ease and keeping it professional.  Her experience for a first exam couldn’t have been better, and I was very pleased with the critique as well after the fact.  It was encouraging and accurate, with useful points for her to apply in her future learning.  Thank you CC for providing such a top notch adjudicator, and thank you to Michael!

Michael,

Thank you so much for your wonderful musical direction, patience and sense of humour as we prepared and performed our LMAC Christmas concerts.

We appreciate the countless hours you devote to these presentations and look forward to our new music in January.

Happy Holidays!

Elaine

Michael .. I just wanted to say thank you for all the input you gave my students this week. Your encouraging words have really resonated on them. Also a new confidence they are feeling, it truly is amazing how positive it was for them during this really dark time. You gave them so much , and for that I am grateful. All the best to you . You are an inspiration!

Hi Michael How are you! Thank you so much for your fantastic judging today! Great comments for all the kids! So positive, knowledgeable and encouraging! They all had a great time! Some of of are really nervous because they haven’t sung live for 2 years but they are very happy after they are done! Thanks again for everything

Dear Michael,

Just wanted to thank you for your wonderful work yesterday!  You were so kind and gracious to everyone, and so generous in your comments, both written and verbal.

How you survived that schedule, I’ll never know! When we left after 4, you hadn’t even had a break and had still more to do!

I would love to have you adjudicate my festival in the near future – we’d be very lucky to have you.

Thank you for making it such a positive experience for all of us!

All the best,

Irene

Thank you Michael. Your speech arts adjudications were both kind and constructive. My students learn so much by participating in the CFMTA e-Festival. Camera communication skills are much needed these days in our new virtual world.

Dear Michael,

I wanted to thank you so much for your insightful and encouraging feedback on my students' exams this season!  You most certainly have a gift for adjudicating, and I appreciate so much the care you take to present your observations in an articulate and supportive way.  My students and I are grateful to have had this opportunity to perform for you during such an important stage in their musical development.

Hello Michael:

I loved being at the Concert tonight. Peyton blew me away with her performance! Her song and how she performed it was amazing!

I always love seeing you and hearing you play.

Thank you so much for teaching and guiding me through my musical journey.

I will send you my program for my assessment very soon.

I love learning with you,

Elaine

Hello Michael,

I just wanted to thank you for making Serena’s piano exam a positive experience!  She was nervous, but you put her at ease.  I remember being examined through RCM by stern, no nonsense examiners who made the students more nervous than they already were.

At any rate, she very happy with her mark and can’t wait to start grade 7!

Thanks again,

Have a great summer,

Kristen Moan (Serena’s mom)

By the way Michael,

I just love how much enthusiasm and knowledge and excellence you bring to music teaching for not only Keenan but our whole community. It has been really inspiring to see the events you’ve put on and the true professionalism that you put into teaching all your students.

Keenan has really enjoyed working with you and he seems to be becoming even more motivated to learn more about music and performance as time goes on.

Thank you,

Gerry
